I love my iPhone and my iPod, but I really enjoy keeping them separate. I don’t want 16 GB of music clogging up my phone and I don’t want to hang a huge 6S off my waistband when I mow.

I love Apple’s products, but sometimes I really hate their “let’s decide things for the consumer” strategy.

Welcome to my world.

But seriously kids today don’t own music. They stream it all.

Just pay apple another $10/mo to stream everything. You’re clearly not paying them enough already.

You’re right, that’s what they do. However, in this case, I think it’s market driven. No one buys those anymore. I still like my iPod shuffle with the clip when I travel, and it’s great for exercising.

I mean, they already exist. Just don’t buy a new one.

I have a Walkman mp3 (shut up) that’s like 10 years old and works great. I intend to continue using it for another 10.

I had a previous generation Nano (the square one). Loved it. The volume buttons got jammed and it only plays on full volume now. Sad. That thing had an amazing DAC and decent battery life.

My wife has an old 160gb Classic and apparently they go for good money on eBay. Weird.

They aren’t coming to your house to take away the ones you already have, are they? Just buy a few extra when they go on closeout and you should be good for the next 20 years.

Even the broken ones go for pretty good cash. I’ve acquired a few parts.

Fair point, I might just hoard a few.

True, all my music comes from Spotify. But if the Nano had a Spotify app and offline capability I would almost definitely have one, running with my phone sucks.

I’m 34. I never bothered to amass a collection of downloaded music. I went directly from having a big binder of CDs that I kept saying I was going to rip into FLAC files (but never did) to streaming. Downloading and organizing a bunch of downloaded music was entirely unappealing to me. I just want to listen to stuff, I don’t want to manage a catalog of it.

If you have wifi that reaches outside your house you can use a smartwatch (Apple or otherwise) and bluetooth headphones to stream whatever you want.

Exactly! I listen to too much different music for buying all of it to make sense and I don’t want to illegally download everything so I’m more than happy to pay 10 bucks a month for Spotify. I more than get my money’s worth.

I hate Apple and their products. I’ve worked for them a few times and they are dicks!  I will never work on their show again.

I’m 28 (a kid), and I have like 350-400 CDs , and at least maybe 40 or so albums on vinyl. Streaming has a crappy quality that is good enough for the car but not for the house(for me anyways). I also stream from my phone when mowing the lawn or playing music in the garage for the fact that its convenience out-weights the quality. But in the house, when all I want to do is listen, its quality or nothing. (lol nerf or nothing!)

Honestly, if you have a bunch of music in mp3 or any other format on your computer, the 5 to 15 dollar mp3 players that use sd cards do everything your expensive mp3 players can. lol your Walkman is probably just fine and will last another 10 years!

I’ve yet to jump on the Spotify bandwagon because it also feels like too much effort to me. But that’s just with playing with the free version.

I feel like the radio function of Pandora does a much better job of creating a shuffle playlist of music I’ll like. With Spotify it’s like, browse this genre or that artist and the playlists and Pandora-style radio kinda suck. The one thing I liked about Spotify over Pandora was in the free version of Pandora the “high” quality setting was only 64 Kbps which was not very good and Spotify has much higher bitrates.

I accidentally signed up for the Pandora Premium trial (apparently I tapped on the “start your trial now” button without realizing it) and its high quality setting is 192 Kbps. I only just realized a day or two that I was in the Premium version so I haven’t tried anything beyond the same shuffle radio stations I had before.

It looks like you can search for artists and play albums, but there’s no way to browse artists by genre. It looks like you can create playlists as well. There’s a lower Pandora Plus tier that’s $5/month instead of $10 for Premium, and it doesn’t have the album and playlist options, but it’s ad-free and has the higher audio quality.

I dunno, either of the Pandora options might be worth it for someone like me who finds all of the options on Spotify to be daunting. But then there’s the issue of Pandora not offering family plans like Spotify does and so my wife and I would each pay a separate subscription.

I’m still tempted to keep at least Pandora Plus because the same damn ad grating into my skull over and over again 6 different times during a workout annoys the crap out of me, especially since it seems like Pandora ads are the most annoying possible ads.

But basically, typing this post is way more effort than I usually put into picking and choosing music at this point.

I could live with that. I don’t mind iOS. I just don’t want something as big as a current iPhone.

I’m weird about music. Every streaming service I’ve ever tried ends up playing so much stuff I don’t like that it’s easier for me manually curate my music.

See I love building my own playlists. I have a pretty ecliptic taste in music so internet radio usually doesn’t satisfy me (what do you mean there’s no indie/classic rock/EDM/outside rap station?). Also when I am in the mood for a specific genre the curated Spotify playlists actually tend to be pretty decent. I also prefer it for DJing(not a real DJ, just good at making event-appropriate playlists/usually willing to leave my phone on music) at parties/get togethers/road trips with friends because the queueing system is pretty good so you can have a solid base playlist going and still take requests without derailing the playlist.

Apple hasn’t really made real iPods since they stopped selling the ones with hard drives in them.

Get a cheap Android phone that takes a high capacity SD card, figure out which 3rd party music player app(s) you like best, and move on.

A year ago I might have agreed - I still used an old 3rd gen nano when I mowed the lawn. Now I have an iPhone 7 and it’s changed my mind. It’s 128 GB, so the music isn’t clogging it up. It’s waterproof, so I don’t worry about sweating all over it. I wear it on and armband and it’s light enough that I don’t really notice it. I run miles with it, mountain bike with it, do yard work with it, etc. I thought it would be too bulky at first, and on a belt clip it is, but it doesn’t bother me on the arm.
